Disturbance, Scale, and Boundary in Wilderness Management

چکیده
Natural disturbances are critical to wilderness management. This paper reviews recent research on natural disturbance and addresses the problem of managing for disturbances in a world of human-imposed scales and boundaries. The dominant scale issue in disturbance management is the question of patch dynamic equilibrium. The dominant boundary issue in disturbance management is the effect of boundary conditions on disturbance frequency and magnitude. Human property and attitudes outside wilderness areas influence management decisions on disturbances within natu-

Forest recovery patterns in response to divergent disturbance regimes in the Border Lakes region of Minnesota (USA) and Ontario (Canada)
The persistence of landscape-scale disturbance legacies in forested ecosystems depends in part on the nature and strength of feedback among disturbances, their effects, and subsequent recovery processes such as tree regeneration and canopy closure. We investigated factors affecting forest recovery rates over a 25-year time period in a large (6 million ha) landscape where geopolitical boundaries...
متن کاملPersonal wilderness relationships: building on a transactional approach.
Wilderness managers are charged with the challenging goal of balancing resource protection and experience quality across a broad, value-laden landscape. While research has provided insight into visitors' motivations and their meanings for wilderness, a struggle exists to implement experiential concepts within current management frameworks. This research posits the human experience of wilderness...
متن کاملBoundary Feedback Stabilization of a Nonlinear Flexible Gantry Manipulator Using Disturbance Observer
This paper aims to develop a boundary control solution for a single-link gantry robot manipulator with one axis of rotation. The control procedure is considered with link’s transverse vibrations while system undergoes rigid body nonlinear large rotation and translation. Initially, based on Hamilton principle, governing equations of hybrid motions as a set of partial differential equations...
متن کاملCatastrophic Declines in Wilderness Areas Undermine Global Environment Targets
Humans have altered terrestrial ecosystems for millennia [1], yet wilderness areas still remain as vital refugia where natural ecological and evolutionary processes operate with minimal human disturbance [2-4], underpinning key regional- and planetary-scale functions [5, 6]. Despite the myriad values of wilderness areas-as critical strongholds for endangered biodiversity [7], for carbon storage...
متن کاملTemporally inter-comparable maps of terrestrial wilderness and the Last of the Wild
Wilderness areas, defined as areas free of industrial scale activities and other human pressures which result in significant biophysical disturbance, are important for biodiversity conservation and sustaining the key ecological processes underpinning planetary life-support systems. Despite their importance, wilderness areas are being rapidly eroded in extent and fragmented. Here we present the ...
